General survey of Native cultures of the Americas. Topics to be covered include prehistory, language, religion, aesthetics, culture contact and change, contemporary issues, and social, economic and political organization.

Learning Outcomes

1Differentiate Native American cultures and describe traditional lifeways for each.

2Describe the arrival of the first people in the Western Hemisphere.

3Identify contemporary issues facing Native Americans and the historical context of these issues.

4Explain the ongoing relationship between the U.S. government and federally recognized tribal entities.

5Assess the role of Native American studies in the development of the discipline of Anthropology in North America.
