Spring 2025 Lecture Distance Learning Lower DivisionBehavioral/Social SciencesIntroduction to the ideas and practices of archaeology that are used in the contemporary study of human prehistory. Emphasis is placed on the social and technological changes that accompanied major turning points in the human past, including the earliest stone tools, the development of farming, through the advent of writing and monumental architecture among ancient states.
Learning Outcomes1Demonstrate an understanding of basic archaeological procedures in the field and laboratory (e.g., excavation, survey, dating methods).
2Discuss the ethical concerns of collecting, analyzing, and curating archaeological materials.
3Identify and critically evaluate datasets appropriate for addressing questions about the ancient past.
4Formulate an interpretive argument that bridges archaeological data and past human behavior.
