Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionFluid properties; hydrostatics; kinematics and dynamics of fluid flows; conservation of mass, energy, and momentum; flows in pipes and open channels. Formal laboratory experiments.
Learning Outcomes1Determine fundamental fluid properties for different fluids and flows.
2Calculate forces on objects submerged in both static and flowing fluids.
3Compute pressures in both static and flowing fluids, and the velocities associated with different flows explain boundary layer properties such as shear stress, turbulent velocity profile, and boundary layer thickness.
4Quantify energy loss and the flow rates associated with different flow networks in channels and pipes.
5Design pump systems and pipe networks.
6Characterize and calculate water depths and their variation for flows in rivers and channels.
7Calculate drag and lift on objects submerged in flowing fluids.
8Calculate forces and fluxes in momentum balance problems.
