Fall 2026 Lecture Laboratory Preparation Laboratory Upper DivisionIntroduction to the nature and origin of soils and rocks; engineering significance of geologic landforms and soil deposits; identification and engineering classification of soils; engineering behavior and properties of soils; permeability, compressibility, shearing resistance; soil compaction.
Learning Outcomes1Understand how soils and rocks are formed.
2Classify soils and understand how important soil characteristics influence their response to loading.
3Plan compaction quality control for embankment and road construction.
4Estimate properties (shear strength, stiffness, coefficient of consolidation, hydraulic conductivity) for use in design or analysis of soil structures, such as foundations, retaining structures or slopes.
5Solve basic groundwater flow boundary value problems.
6Solve one-dimensional consolidation and compression problems.
