Fall 2026 Lecture Lower DivisionHumanitiesIn this class, students learn what it means to study English Literature at the college level and to be literary critics-those who analyze, discuss, and write about literature. Students will study the foundational genres of literature (drama, poetry, and prose). They will also learn about literary terms, figurative language, and narrative structures and approaches.
Learning Outcomes1Explain how the conventions of genre shape meaning, form, and interpretation in literary texts.
2Apply literary terms and concepts-including figurative language and other critical terms-accurately and appropriately in oral and written literary analysis.
3Analyze narrative elements such as speaker or narrator, point of view, plot structure, characterization, setting, and style within literary texts.
4Construct evidence-based interpretive claims about literary texts using close reading and relevant textual evidence.
