Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course provides a foundation for understanding employment and labor law and their impact on human resource practices. Students will examine major laws and legal issues affecting staffing, training, compensation, performance management, employee relations, health, safety, and security. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of legal principles to HR decision-making across public, private, and non-profit sectors. The course also explores contemporary challenges such as corporate social responsibility, workplace conflict resolution, globalization, and the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in HR functions, monitoring, and compliance.
Learning Outcomes1Select and apply legally and practically appropriate staffing techniques according to basic principles of validity and reliability, including consideration of AI-enabled hiring tools and practices as well as their compliance with employment law.
2Articulate the value of employee training, development, job design, and job enrichment.
3Summarize basic components of compensation plans and performance evaluation systems, assess potential deficiencies, and compare elements as they relate to organizational objectives.
4Apply major labor laws to employment practices in employee relations, health, safety and security, and to consider the connection between labor relations practices and outcomes.
5Articulate unique challenges throughout HR related to practice in public, private, and non-profit sectors.
6Compare HR practices and policies from varying perspectives, evaluate source credibility, and draw conclusions based on that information.
