Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionKinematics of fluid flow. Differential equations for environmental fluid flows, including effects of variable density and rotation. Ideal fluid flow; boundary layer approximation; turbulence; water waves.
Learning Outcomes1Perform basic calculations on environmental flows using standard approaches to estimate velocities, pressures, water elevations, concentrations, densities, resultant forces, and stresses.
2Derive and apply fundamental solutions and relationships for environmental flows using the appropriate forms of the Navier-Stokes equations.
3Apply dimensional analysis and empirical relationships to estimate properties of environmental flows.
4Identify fundamental processes present in environmental flows.
