Fall 2026 Lecture Lower DivisionThis workshop-based course introduces students to the reading and writing of science fiction and speculative fiction. Emphasis is placed on developing fundamental narrative techniques, cultivating active and critical reading practices, and engaging in collaborative workshop discussions. Students analyze how language and story shape meaning and experience, compose original works of speculative fiction, and refine their writing through reflection and revision. Students must have fulfilled the Written Communication credit of the UCC with a minimum grade of D-.
Learning Outcomes1Apply basic narrative principles, including setting, character, pace, theme, style, and conceit, in both published texts and original writing.
2Analyze how language and narrative strategies influence readers emotionally and intellectually.
3Evaluate creative works, providing constructive feedback based on reflection and response.
4Demonstrate engagement and creativity in the writing process by producing original work.
