Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course examines the relationships between rhetoric and generative artificial intelligence (AI) using classical and contemporary rhetorical theory. While exploring how AI can support writing, students will gain insights into the challenges posed by AI, including issues of ethics, freedom, privacy, and sustainability. Includes application of rhetorical principles to the design and critique of new technologies.
Learning Outcomes1Use knowledge of rhetorical history and contemporary rhetorical theory to evaluate the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI).
2Write and design workplace documents by engaging common elements of AI tools, such as prompts and training data.
3Integrate AI tools with other writing tools to create persuasive and informative content in diverse media.
4Develop ethical approaches to using AI in research, persuasion, and critique.
