Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course explores legal problems facing sport. Students will learn fundamental legal principles including employment law, ADA requirements, hazing, sexual harassment, and Title IX application. Both past and current legal cases related to sport, recreation and fitness industries are examined. Concerns and problem-solving for issues of risk management are also explored.
Learning Outcomes1Develop an understanding of the history and development of the American legal system and courts.
2Analyze and apply ethical and legal literature in case law, statutes, periodicals, and texts.
3Explain the basic understanding of terminology and procedures used in legal proceedings.
4Discuss legal aspects most important to sport management including tort law, contract law, physical activity situations, constitutional law, Title VII and Title IX.
5Create a comprehensive understanding of risk management and other legal theories to minimize or avoid legal liability in sport settings.
6Gain a deeper understanding of the ethical reasoning/decision-making process and develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to apply moral reasoning in dealing with ethical dilemmas in sport.
