Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis is a required introductory course for the coursework in the STEM Teaching Certificate program. In this one-credit course students will explore foundational pedagogical techniques and best practices in STEM teaching and learning. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks, case study observations, and hands-on teaching experiences students will develop an understanding of effective STEM education while exploring their potential career path in teaching. This course emphasizes research-based practice teaching models, inquiry-based learning, technology integration and student-centered instructional strategies. Students will be introduced to various contexts for STEM education, from formal classrooms to informal settings and industry training.
Learning Outcomes1Analyze fundamental principles of and engage in effective STEM teaching and learning. (Weeks 1, 2, & 3)
2Demonstrate how to elicit students' ideas in STEM through various questioning, writing and discussion techniques. (Weeks 4, 5, & 6)
3Design and deliver STEM learning experiences (mini-lessons) incorporating active learning strategies. (Weeks 7, 8, & 9)
4Evaluate various teaching methodologies and their application in STEM education. (week 10, 11, &12)
5Identify various career paths involving STEM education. (week 13, 14, &15)
