Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionIntroduction to hurricanes, including science, forecasting, climate, and risk/impacts, as well as the observed structure and variability of the Earth's tropical atmosphere. The latter includes the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the Hadley cell, monsoons, the Walker cell, equatorial waves, El Niño Southern Oscillation, the Madden-Julian Oscillation, and tropical easterly waves. Prior coursework in atmospheric physics is required.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the basic science of how hurricanes work and the hazards they create.
2Forecast a real-world hurricane and its hazards.
3Explain the nature of key large-scale circulations in the tropical atmosphere and how hurricanes and other tropical weather fit into this climate context.
