Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course is an overview on the police and their mission as enforcers of criminal laws in American society. The course will explore the evolution of policing, at the federal, state, and local levels. Students will learn about the methods, issues, and challenges to present-day policing relevant to the complexities of balancing crime control methodologies in a free society.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the number of different policing eras and their implications for police practice.
2Discuss the pros and cons of a number of these movements and their applicability to reducing specific crime problems.
3Relate these policing eras or paradigms to the larger body of police research beyond police effectiveness.
