Spring 2026 Lecture Upper Division
In this course, we will explore French culture through its relationship with sports. We will examine popular sports in France and compare how French people practice and watch these sports with how members of the students' culture(s) interact with the same sports. Students will use sports as a lens for comparison between French culture and their own culture(s). We will also study the history of the modern Olympic Games in France. Conducted in French.
Learning Outcomes1Compare the most popular sports in France and relate them to popular sports in the U.S. or their own culture, and the ways that sports culture impacts and reflects both French and American society.
2Describe how French people practice and watch sports and relate that knowledge to their own experiences with watching or participating in sports and athletic competitions.
3Summarize the history of the most popular sports in France.
4Examine how the students' own favorite sport is played (or not) in France and interpret the difference between their own culture and French culture in respect to sports.
