Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course focuses on teaching literacy in preschool and primary-grade classrooms. It covers the developmental foundations and curriculum applications of literacy teaching in pre-kindergarten and primary grades and includes ways to plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate instruction for children with and without disabilities and children who are learning English. Field hours will be required.
Learning Outcomes1Describe the purposes and importance of reading and writing in early childhood classrooms and homes, including the importance of supporting children's vocabulary, language comprehension, alphabet knowledge, phonemic awareness, and concept and functional use of print.
2Explain the science of reading, particularly the current state of reading research and implications of research for reading instruction.
3Practice strategies for facilitating children's development of literacy skills.
4Plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate instruction in literacy including responding to the needs of diverse learners.
5Describe the importance and demonstrate the use of Indiana State Standards for literacy for children from birth-3rd grade.
6Demonstrate the dispositions and skills of a developing early childhood teacher, as described in this syllabus.
