Spring 2026 Laboratory Upper DivisionEnvironmental sensors and the data these devices generate are becoming increasingly central to routine ecological and environmental science research and monitoring. This course introduces students to the function of a range of environmental sensors, operation of microcontrollers that control these sensors, and application of data produced by these sensors. This class emphasizes a practical approach with hands-on work with programming sensors and analyzing data.
Learning Outcomes1Learn how to apply environmental sensors to research and monitoring efforts.
2Visualize and model environmental data from sensors available on live streaming data portals.
3Use embedded microcontrollers to collect data and stream those data to the web.
4Learn how to problem solve using online resources and discussion forums (including Slack and Stackoverflow).
