Spring 2026 Laboratory Lecture Credit By ExaminationDepartmental CreditLower DivisionThis course introduces the process of 3D geometric modeling, and the construction techniques used in the creation of constraint-based solid and surface models. Part modeling and assembly modeling are included, as well as manipulation of the geometric model. Emphasis is on the use of the design process as a problem-solving method and the capture of design intent and modeling behavior to enable the downstream use of 3D solid and surface modeling databases. The role of the 3D model in the overall product design process and the place of the geometric product definition in the product lifecycle are covered. Product Data management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) are covered as they relate to the design process.
Learning Outcomes1Distinguish between the different product design processes.
2Explain the most appropriate design process for a given project.
3Leverage project management techniques to manage individual and group work.
4Explain the importance of freehand sketching as a communication tool for the designer.
5Construct clear freehand Multiview and pictorial freehand sketches to convey design ideas.
