Fall 2025 Instructors:

A historical survey of the visual arts and architecture of China from antiquity to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the relation of a broad range of art forms to their social and cultural contexts.

Learning Outcomes

1Identify individuals who have made a major contribution to a style or period.

2Compare artworks by identifying their differences and similarities.

3Define terms and concepts in relation to a particular style, artist, or artwork.

4Discuss historical events, social forces, and cultural trends that have had an influence on a particular style, artist, or artwork.

5Build knowledge and understanding of Chinese art.

6Develop analytical and writing skills through textural studies of primary and secondary sources, as well as writing exercises.
