Fall 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionA review of the underlying nutritional components and pathophysiology of common human diseases/disorders and current approaches for the prevention, management, and treatment of nutrition-related diseases. Building upon previous coursework in micronutrient and macronutrient metabolism, the focus is on the metabolic disturbances occurring with diseases such as diabetes, GI diseases, obesity kidney diseases, cardiovascular disease, and anemia.
Learning Outcomes1Explain the underlying nutritional aspects of several common diseases.
2Use current information technologies to locate and apply evidence-based guidelines and protocols.
3Use principles of pathophysiology to explain the nutritional aspects of diseases, identify nutrition-related problems and determine and evaluate nutrition interventions; this will include the integration of multiple disciplines (e.g., biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, physiology).
4Have knowledge of prevention theories and guidelines for nutrition-related diseases.
