Fall 2025 Instructors:

Category management is used by retailers and consumer products companies to reduce costs and increase revenue, based on consumer behavior. Technology to implement category management is used at all levels of the value chain, from producer to procurement to the retail store. Students in this course learn about the theory behind category management from both sales and retail perspectives, then apply that knowledge using industry software to create and analyze visual and data sales plans.

Learning Outcomes

1Demonstrate via discussion and examination, concepts of space planning and category management.

2Create planograms using space planning knowledge and skills.

3Develop a sales plan utilizing category management process and sales data.

4Analyze effects on profit and revenue based on category management applications and planogram sales data.

5Design a retail space that includes: consumer purchasing decisions, coordinates product selection and supply, shelf merchandising, promotion and pricing.
