Fall 2025 Instructors:

This course will introduce students to Internet of Things (IoT) fundamentals and investigate IoT security threats, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures. It will also include cloud-enabled IoT components, which is integration of cloud computing and IoT, and relevant security issues in this domain. Students will learn about the state-of-art IoT technology, platforms and services, protocols, and advanced topics (e.g., Machine/Deep Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)) in IoT security. This course will provide extended knowledge and exposure to students on IoT attacks, security policies, access control models, ML/AI models for IoT security and framework. The course will also explore data privacy issues associated with IoT and its components and key technologies. Students will gain knowledge and skills through hands-on project and research experience on real-world IoT devices and applications, real-world cloud computing platforms, and will work on specific IoT application domains, such as smart homes, smart health (medical IoT devices) and wearable IoT. Permission of instructor required.

Learning Outcomes

1Apply the Internet of Things (IoT) fundamentals, including IoT architectures, protocols, and platforms, to design different IoT use cases.

2Identify security risks, threats and vulnerabilities in different IoT application domains (e.g., smart homes, smart health, smart transportation).

3Analyze security requirements for IoT application domains to determine appropriate secure provisioning actions in smart connected systems and communities.

4Implement security models and technical controls to mitigate security threats and vulnerabilities in real-world IoT use cases.
