Fall 2025 Lecture Distance Learning Upper DivisionThis graduate-level course reviews the principles and practices of lifestyle medicine. Students will explore the evidence-based application of lifestyle medicine in preventing, managing, and treating chronic disease. Students will learn about the application of all six pillars of lifestyle medicine: physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress management, substance avoidance, and health relationships / social well-being. Students in this course will obtain knowledge, skills, and tools via lectures, research reviews, group discussions, and experiential learning. Throughout the course, students will learn to comprehensively apply lifestyle medicine to healthy individuals and those with chronic diseases across the community. Upon completing the course, students will be empowered to promote healthy lifestyle change with clients/patients in their future healthcare professions. This course can be taken as part of a course series that will prepare students for a health coaching certification and the potential to sit for the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) health coaching certification exam.
Learning Outcomes1Explore the application of evidence-based lifestyle medicine and its effectiveness in long-term health outcomes.
2Assess the six pillars of lifestyle medicine and the impact and potential benefits of optimizing different variables, such as physical activity/exercise, nutrition, stress management, sleep, emotional well-being, social connectivity, etc.
3Evaluate literature in lifestyle medicine critically and assess the utilization of different disease prevention and management strategies.
4Appraise various health conditions and the power of lifestyle medicine on disease management and quality of life.
5Integrate lifestyle medicine concepts into behavior change models and coaching techniques, such as the transtheoretical model, motivational interviewing, appreciative inquiry, strengths-based approach, goal setting, and more.
6Explore the importance and impact of self-care and positivity for health and wellness professionals.
