Fall 2025 Lecture Lower DivisionFinance Industry Exploration will introduce students to various sectors of the financial services industry through lectures, guest lectures by financial market participants and regular reading of financial publications (Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, etc.). Students will understand potential career paths, how specific financial markets operate, career success factors, employment differentiation, industry vernacular and suggested future coursework. Topics covered may include (subject to speaker availability) - Investment Banking, Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate Finance, Corporate Development, Public Finance, Commercial Banking, Sales and Trading, Wealth Management, Asset Management, Private Equity and Private Credit, Venture Capital, Investor Relations and FinTech.
Learning Outcomes1Analyze and explain the commercial landscape of the finance industry, including key firms, influential personalities, and the challenges and opportunities each face.
2Develop and evaluate a tailored career strategy by identifying one or two industry sectors, multiple companies, and specific roles of interest, and designing a curricular and extracurricular pathway to enhance competitiveness in the job market.
3Identify and interpret the success factors of various industry sectors and evaluate how specific roles generate value for their company and clients.
4Demonstrate the ability to discuss industry topics with professionals by using appropriate terminology and providing relevant historical and company-specific examples.
