Fall 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course prepares teacher candidates to select, evaluate, and integrate children's literature and media in K-6 classrooms. By focusing on high-quality, engaging texts and media, candidates will learn to choose materials that are developmentally appropriate and reflect a range of experiences, cultures, and perspectives. The course emphasizes the critical role that literature and media play in fostering vocabulary development, enhancing critical thinking skills, and supporting learning across subjects. As part of this exploration, candidates will examine how K-6 students can develop the skills to use comprehension strategies independently and efficiently, enabling them to grow academically and engage with complex and varied texts.
Learning Outcomes1Integrate literature and media into content area lessons to enhance vocabulary (including academic language skills), critical thinking, and comprehension.
2Select and evaluate three trade books to read aloud during a math, a social studies, and a science lesson.
3Identify instructional strategies supported by the Science of Reading that teach k-6 students' academic language skills, vocabulary knowledge, and reading and listening comprehension.
