Fall 2025 Instructors:

A study of computational tools to model, analyze, and manage the built environment, specifically, the civil infrastructure from a life cycle and system's perspective. Such computational tools include geospatial technologies, engineering sensing technologies, engineering database, building information modeling, object-oriented modeling, and spatial analytics.

Learning Outcomes

Integrate geographic information system (GIS) and building information modeling (BIM) into a digital twin.

Explain the fundamental concepts and theories in BIM to more effectively use it as a tool in infrastructure life cycle management.

Apply BIM tools to design infrastructure, estimate cost, and plan its construction process.

Reason the necessity to incorporate GIS in supplementing BIM in infrastructure engineering.

Explain the fundamental concepts and theories in GIS in order to identify the right tools for given tasks.

Apply GIS tools to model infrastructure and its surroundings.

Apply object-oriented modeling approach in both GIS and BIM to identify the common ground for integration.

Design an object-oriented model to integrate GIS and BIM.

Use modeling tools to model the civil infrastructure and its spatial context from a life cycle perspective.

Identify the data needs and functionality requirements in life cycle infrastructure engineering.

Select and apply sensing technologies to collect data.

Design geospatial database to store and manage infrastructure data

Design a system to use geospatial database for varying tasks throughout the infrastructure life cycle.

Develop a digital twin to solve a selected infrastructure engineering problem.

Identify and articulate an infrastructure engineering problem. Propose a methodology to address the problem. Work as a team to implement the proposed method. Communicate and present the findings.
