This course teaches students the key communication principles and skills necessary to deliver direct patient care and interact with other health care professionals. This includes developing cultural self-awareness, evaluating patient comprehension, and improving personal communication skills.

Learning Outcomes

1Apply the steps of the PPCP to collect and analyze patient-specific information, assess the information, develop and implement a patient-centered plan, and follow-up once the plan has been implemented.

2Identify patient-specific factors and incorporate these aspects into patient care.

3Demonstrate effective communication skills for patients, caregivers, peers, and other healthcare providers.

4Develop strategies to appropriately adjust behavior or communication style based on cultural and communication considerations to optimize patient care.

5Begin to develop a structured clinical thought process when presented with a patient case.

6Work effectively within a group of peers to evaluate a patient's case and complete clinical documentation.
