Summer 2026 Lecture Lower DivisionBehavioral/Social SciencesThe purpose of this course is to give students an opportunity to explore various facets of multiculturalism within their communities. We will examine the influence of social group identities on teaching, learning, and communities as they relate to contexts both in and out of schools. While this course is broad in scope, the primary aim is to assist you in exploring what it means to be an educator and/or concerned citizen in a society that is multicultural.
Learning Outcomes1Understand and describe the impact of diversity on American schools and classrooms.
2Understand and describe how their own views and perspectives have been shaped by their backgrounds and identities.
3Understand and describe the challenges of teaching and communicating in diverse and multicultural schools and communities.
4Demonstrate the awareness, knowledge, skills, and actions needed for teaching in diverse and multicultural schools and communities.
5Identify strengths as a community volunteer and collaborate with local organizations to identify community needs.
6Recognize the needs of community stakeholders through formal and informal conversations.
