Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course introduces students to the basic methods of ethnographic research: the collection, analysis, and presentation of data derived from the systematic, direct observation of human behavior and interviewing of key informants. Students are required to complete a field project.
Learning Outcomes1Identify and synthesize key theoretical and methodological approaches to ethnographic field work in the following broad domains: 1) research ethics, 2) data collection (field notes, participant observation, interviewing, visual and digital methods), 3) data management, and 4) communication of research results.
2Demonstrate scientific and scholarly literacy through critical discussion, production of scholarly reports, and public dissemination of research efforts.
3Develop qualitative competence and problem solving skills in an active learning environment through practical data collection and processing exercises.
