Introduction to approaches analytical chemists use to analyze the composition of matter, including statistics, calibration, and understanding chemical equilibrium (acid/base, complexation, solubility, polyprotic acid treatment, acid/base/redox/precipitation titrations); general approaches to analysis at the trace level; recognition and evaluation of possible sources of error and how error propagates; introduction to how light interacts with matter (and how analytical chemists can take advantage of this).

Learning Outcomes

1Understand the fundamentals and figures of merit of different analytical techniques.

2Learn how to properly select an analytical technique for accurate quantitative determination.

3Perform accurate quantitative measurements.

4Use Excel or Google Sheets or Python for data analysis and plotting.

5Analyze the results and determine the experimental uncertainty.

6Report the experimental data properly.

7Perform statistical analysis.
