Spring 2025 Instructors:

An in-depth examination of human resource management in the context of union-management relations. Emphasis is on understanding how and why unions form, the legal context, and changing competitive environment for labor management relations. Covers the dynamics of the collective bargaining process, including the determinants of bargaining power, preparation of labor contract demands, and negotiation tactics. The course culminates with an extended mock negotiation exercise.

Learning Outcomes

1Provide you with a sense of US labor history and acquaint you with labor laws essential for managers in multinational corporations.

2Understand power dynamics not only between unions and management, but between managers and subordinates in everyday situations, in any organization.

3Familiarize you with the union organizing process and help you understand its relevance for managers in non-unionized firms.

4Engage you in a mock contract negotiation so that you may experience the dynamics of collective bargaining and negotiation.

5Improve your conflict management skills.
