Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course will orient students to the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) across the lifespan. Assessment and evidence-based intervention for people who cannot meet their daily communication needs via natural speech and/or writing and who need AAC will be covered. AAC is neither disorder- nor age-specific. As such, AAC strategies, techniques, and options may be used across the lifespan and with people who have severe communication disorders that interfere with expressive and/or receptive speech and/or language. In that way, AAC can have broad applicability across settings and populations.
Learning Outcomes1Demonstrate knowledge of hardware, software, feature matching, and evidence related to use of AAC and SGD with individuals with complex communication needs (CCNs).
2Demonstrate knowledge related to the assessment and intervention for various people for whom AAC might be appropriate.
3Apply and integrate evidence-based knowledge of typical language development toward the assessment and intervention for individuals with complex communication needs (CCNs).
4Acquire knowledge and evaluate information about a range of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) modalities as it applies to the assessment and intervention for individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) across the lifespan.
5Acquire familiarity with and demonstrate use of AAC app evaluation rubrics used in decision-making regarding a range of complex communication needs (CCN).
6Acquire, evaluate, and effectively present evidence-based knowledge on a specific topic within the scope of augmentative and alternative communication modalities.
