Advanced study of equine lameness with a focus on the performance/sport horse. Physical examination of the locomotor system (axial and appendicular), diagnosis, treatment, and establishment of a prognosis are emphasized through lecture and laboratory sessions.

Learning Outcomes

1Examine a horse for lameness and be able to identify which limb is lame and then formulate and execute a diagnostic plan to be able to reach a definitive diagnosis and then develop a treatment plan and prognosis.

2Recognize the pathognomonic abnormal gaits for the forelimb and hind limb in horses.

3Examine equine radiographs and identify common diseases of the joints and explain the difference between the various advanced imaging modalities and when would be appropriate to utilize them.

4Explain the importance and basic principles of farriery and demonstrate how to properly remove a shoe from a hoof.

5Recognize the common lameness conditions in horses and describe their basic treatment options and prognoses.
