Spring 2025 Instructors:

Physical and chemical structure of biomass. Reaction kinetics of hydrolysis of hemicellulose and cellulose to fermentable sugars. Fundamentals of ethanol production by fermentation. Separation of fermentation products into pure components.

Learning Outcomes

1Analyze bioprocesses using engineering design principles, bioreactor simulations, application of basic separations methods, and applying engineering economic analysis.

2Develop process models for batch and continuous fermentation, cell culture, and enzymatic bioreactors.

3Analyze the impact of fundamental advances in bio-sciences on bioprocess engineering and the environment, and the potential of these advances to solve societal problems.

4Understand the impact of biosafety and regulatory considerations on process design.
