Spring 2025 Instructors:

This class focuses on one of several important American literary-historical periods: colonial, nineteenth-, or twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature. In it, students examine individual authors and texts while also gaining a wider understanding of their historical context. Students also will engage with a variety of genres and practice numerous critical approaches to literature.

Learning Outcomes

1Identify and construct arguments about genres of, and theoretical approaches to, historical literature.

2Explain the diversity of peoples, interests, and ideologies with specific American literary-historical periods.

3Show how literary artifacts are both agents and reflections of culture.

4Construct written arguments that demonstrate historical, cultural, and global awareness.

5Produce successful academic writing, including a debatable thesis, and appropriately presented evidence.
