Spring 2026 Laboratory Preparation Laboratory Upper DivisionCommunity planning and design. Past, current and emerging planning theories are investigated via lectures, research assignments and studio projects. The interrelationship of land use, circulation, and open space are explored using environmental and sustainable principles within a framework of traditional neighborhood design.
Learning Outcomes1Understand the fundamental terminologies, design strategies, and workflow of master plan community planning.
2Distinguish the attributes and characteristics of different residential types.
3Articulate, utilize and specify methods for spatial layout and resource Integration (open space, transportation, parking and facilities, and building blocks) in different community planning projects.
4Develop well-reasoned design concept and defensible design decisions that best respond to site constraints and planning regulations.
5Apply knowledge of stormwater management and sustainable practices to community design.
6Improve the abilities to research, critical thinking, collaboration, model making (hand and digital), verbal representation, and digital rendering techniques.
