Spring 2026 Lecture Distance LearningThis is the second in the series of courses on the Higher Education Organization. The aim of this course is to provide an overview of leadership and management of higher education institutions in the U.S. from relationship-rich and cultural lenses. The scope of the course seeks to create an appreciation for the complexity of the higher education system, specifically of colleges and universities as ecosystems, through exploration of the leadership and management types, systems and structures both horizontally across institutions and institutional types and vertically within the individual, single institution. The course will examine leadership and management from the presidency to managers at all levels in both academic and administrative units. Permission of instructor required. Prerequisite: EDST 64000.
Learning Outcomes1Explore a variety of literature on HEI leadership and management, integrating literature from the field of higher education as well outside disciplines of business, political science, & sociology.
2Gain an applied knowledge of the complexity of higher education institutions leadership and management by understanding; the different internal roles involved in higher education administration and governance; a variety of external influences and factors that may impact higher education institutions; the critical issues that impact the leadership and management cultures and norms both within and across institutions.
3Analyze and reflect on their personal leadership styles based on HE theory, frameworks, and perspectives.
4Identify and apply HEI leadership and management theory through analysis of critical issues facing higher education institutions.
5Examine complex leadership and management issues from cultural, political and organizational perspectives - specifically the ability to conduct research and analysis using different HEI leadership and management theory and frameworks.
6Develop skills to succinctly and professionally articulate analysis and synthesis of relevant empirical research and literature.
7Formulate and articulate rational arguments through discussions, peer review, presentation, and reflective and research writing.
8Apply theory to practice in a final leadership/management manuscript publication project.
