The purpose of this course is to educate beginning pharmacy students to thoroughly understand the basic physical-chemical principles involved in preparing liquid and semisolid dosage forms and controlled drug delivery systems used in the practice of pharmacy.

Learning Outcomes

1Explain the basic scientific principles involved in the performance of liquid dosage forms, including solution, emulsion, and suspension, and their chemical and physical stability.

2Explain the basic scientific principles involved in controlled drug delivery and nanomedicine and list examples.

3Explain the factors involved in absorption of drugs from solid dosage forms administered by various routes, including transdermal and mucosal routes.

4Explain the basic scientific principles involved in administering sterile solutions, including factors needed to maintain sterility, solution isotonicity and iso-osmolality, IV bags and drip sets.

5Explain how biopharmaceuticals including peptides, proteins, and nucleic acids are formulated and advise on their handling in clinical pharmacy setting.

6Advise patients on the proper use and storage of dosage forms and understand the relationship of dosage form selection to clinical outcomes.

7Explain unique properties of veterinary products.
