The purpose of this general survey course is to introduce students to the principle historical themes of Latin America during the colonial period (roughly, from 1492 to 1810). No prior knowledge of Latin American history is required.

Learning Outcomes

1Demonstrate a grasp of the historical forces that in many ways laid the foundation for present-day Latin America.

2Express understanding of how these major political, social, economic, and cultural issues unfolded in different ways in Latin America, with respect to region, time, and culture.
