This course examines the history of Spain's global empire from the unification of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon to the War of the Spanish Succession. Topics include Spain's European possessions, overseas empire, ruling dynasty, society, and culture.
Learning Outcomes1Assess the mechanisms that made the Spanish imperial system successful and, likewise, appraise its inherit weaknesses.
2Distinguish the different stages in the development of the Spanish empire.
3Judge the extent of the Spanish empire's impact on international politics and regional histories.
