Spring 2026 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course will provide a comprehensive overview of the characteristics and regulatory mechanisms underlying the cardiorespiratory adjustments to exercise. The effects of chronic diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, peripheral artery disease and chronic heart failure, on the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to exercise will also be discussed in detail. Permission of department required.
Learning Outcomes1Describe and compare the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to incremental, submaximal and prolonged exercise.
2Define and analyze the role of muscle afferents and central command on the regulation of cardiovascular and respiratory adjustments to exercise.
3Delineate and evaluate the effects of exercise training on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
4Synthesize recent research findings on the consequences of chronic disease on the cardiovascular and respiratory adjustments to exercise.
