Fall 2023 Lecture Upper DivisionThis course offers a 'compare and contrast' of signed languages and spoken languages, and in the process provides a review of what students have learned about language and speech in their other classes. Issues covered include the definition of 'language,' understanding the interaction of cognition and language, neural resources necessary for use of language in speech and in signing, the relationship between gesture and sign languages, and perception and production in both modalities.
