Spring 2025 Instructors:

A detailed study of the works of one or more figures of English literature from 1832 to 1880: their relation to the literary movements and historical and cultural backgrounds of the age.

Learning Outcomes

1Explain the historical, cultural, and social contexts that influenced Victorian literature, including the effects of the Industrial Revolution, British imperialism, and the rise of the middle class.

2Analyze the structural and thematic elements of different Victorian genres such as the novel, the dramatic monologue, and the sensation novel.

3Evaluate scholarly interpretations of Victorian literature and engage in contemporary critical debates about its relevance to modern issues like colonialism, class, and sexuality.
