Fall 2025 Lecture Lower Division(CMPL 23700) Students learn what lies behind the concept of Liberal Arts: the capabilities, insights and skills of individuals who think critically and freely. It exposes students from across the university to the ideas, skill-set and inspiration that emanates from the liberal arts. They will be introduced to the discipline of Comparative Literature by examining the specific roles that languages and cultures play in the globalized world. The course also demonstrates how a Language and Cultures degree will put students at a greater advantage in career opportunities.
Learning Outcomes1Trace how various cultures have shaped our contemporary models of higher education through written and oral assignments.
2Describe how literary texts from various cultures provided the catalyst for major political and social events throughout history.
3Identify the impact that literary endeavors have in the development of scientific, medical, corporate, environmental and political ideas.
4Articulate clearly why a Liberal Arts education that focuses on languages and intercultural competency is both valuable and marketable in today's global context.
