Fall 2025 Lecture Credit By ExaminationJEDIUpper DivisionA view of the culture and society of the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya). Emphasis on issues of race, politics, religion, and gender through literature and other forms of artistic expression, including film and music. Conducted in English; no knowledge of Arabic required.
Learning Outcomes1Increase ability to think critically about other cultures and societies and appreciate cultural differences.
2Investigate key cultural, social and political issues that have shaped cultures and societies in North Africa.
3Develop understanding of contemporary questions such as nationalism, politics, religion and ethnicity in the region as represented through materials (literary and/or visual) from/about North Africa.
4Develop and improve analytical skills (both oral and written) and enhance their abilities to comprehend, interpret, and analyze texts.
5Expand familiarity and knowledge about core societal and cultural issues of this region and connect to contemporary events in the various countries and communities in North Africa.
