Critical examination of contemporary concepts of curriculum theory. Rational/technical curriculum, social needs/child centered curriculum. Socio-political curriculum theory; curriculum as existential, aesthetic, and phenomenological. Implications for current practice, school reform, and educational research.

Learning Outcomes

1Develop an understanding of the social theories and philosophies that inform contemporary curriculum theorizing.

2Articulate the role of curriculum theorizing in defining and analyzing educational phenomena.

3To utilize curriculum theory toward the development of educative responses to issues of ethics, equity, power, and privilege.

4To synthesize the complexity and tensions of various curriculum theories into frameworks for educational research.
