Learning Outcomes

1Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different models for understanding disability.

2Understand ways normalcy is socially constructed.

3Identify cultural practices that exclude disabled people.

4Compare and contrast disability with other identity categories such as race, gender, and sexuality.

5Discuss ways in which culture defines disability as impairing one's subjectivity and even humanity.

6Analyze literary representations of disabled characters.

7Examine the role of disability in literary works more broadly.
