Spring 2026 Lecture Distance Learning JEDIUpper DivisionThe goal of this course is to provide students with a broad understanding of the biological bases of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. The course will cover neuroanatomical, neurochemical and biological systems that regulate the biological and behavioral response to alcohol. Coverage will also include discussions of the role of environment, age, gender, among other factors that influence the response to alcohol and propensity toward abuse and addiction. The course will also cover the neuroscience of treatment and relapse.
Learning Outcomes1Acquire knowledge about alcohol's effects on the brain and behavior.
2Demonstrate knowledge about the major theories of addiction.
3Critically evaluate primary research about the neuroscience of alcohol.
4Discuss and apply learned knowledge about the neuroscience of alcohol and theories of addiction to "real-world" situations.
5Communicate proficient critical thinking skills about the neuroscience of alcohol through writing.
