Spring 2025 Lecture Upper DivisionJEDIThis course explores the lives and legacies of queens and empresses in early modern Europe within the wider context of gender, political authority, culture, and monarchy. Students will be introduced to new scholarly approaches to the study of female rulership.
Learning Outcomes1Compare the legal, cultural, and symbolic aspects of queenly authority across monarchies and centuries applying the relevant vocabulary and conceptual frameworks.
2Evaluate the political intervention of various individual queens and empresses taking into account the many variables that shaped their rule.
3Distinguish the ways in which queens and empresses shaped national histories as well as European international politics and culture.
