This course traces the intellectual and cultural development of Russia from the revolutionary period to the present. No knowledge of Russian is required.
Learning Outcomes1Increase understanding of the interactions between revolutionary politics and revolutionary art, and explore the role of art in a political society while encountering various strategies authors, composers, etc. used to navigate between creative impulses and political requirements.
2Move beyond the simplistic dichotomy of propaganda vs. dissidence and explore the complex gradations between the extremes of official anti-Soviet culture.
3Increase knowledge of the relationship between cultural production, distribution, and consumption and the forms that culture takes.
4Develop an appreciation for the artistic value of examples of Russian literature, music, and the pictorial arts.
