Spring 2025 Distance Learning Lecture Upper DivisionExamines pathophysiological alterations and clinical management of chronic conditions and illnesses in children and adolescents. Students will synthesize knowledge of developmental, physiological, psychological, and sociocultural factors in the assessment and management of chronic conditions. The focus is on the differential diagnosis, clinical management, and child and family education within the context of primary health care. Chronic illness and health promotion models, as well as biopsychosocial, developmental, and cultural theories are integrated throughout the course. Individual, family, and group intervention strategies are addressed.
Learning Outcomes1Incorporate knowledge of developmental, epidemiological, physiologic, informatics, technology, leadership, systems, policy, quality improvement, family, community, and health promotion theories into the primary health care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic conditions.
2Discriminate among physiological presentations of signs and symptoms in order to differentially diagnosis and manage chronic health problems in infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
3Integrate evidence-based practice standards in the safe, culturally sensitive care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic conditions.
4Incorporate the family and/or support systems into the culturally sensitive plan of care in the management of chronic health problems in order to improve quality patient outcomes.
5Analyze methods to promote health, function, and quality of life, and to reduce morbidity in infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic conditions.
6Apply legal, ethical, and professional nursing standards as they apply to the delivery of safe, quality, primary care of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic conditions.
7Analyze chronic and commonly recurring conditions found in diverse pediatric populations.
8Identify between resources available in diverse settings.
